20th October 2016: 300 Years since the Siege of Corfu
One stamp with a value of €2,00, printed in sheets of 20, commemorating the fact that 300 years ago the Siege of Corfu took place. On the 8th of July 1716 an Ottoman army of 33.000 soldiers landed at Corfu and occupied a part of the island. But the City of Corfu itself, with a defense of 8000 soldiers under command of Count Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg, did not yield. A large storm helped the defense somewhat and on the 11th of August the Ottoman soldiers decided to withdraw and leave the island, and they did so on the 20th of August 1716.
